Hi there and welcome to Episode 2 of the Facilitator Tips video series.

My name is Mark Collard. I’m an experiential trainer and author and the founder of www.playmeo.com, and today I want to talk to you about how to form random teams.

All of us have gone through the experiences of having to pick two captains or the teacher went around the group and went one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four. They may have worked but they weren’t necessarily fun or engaging. I want to share with you a couple of different ways that you can actually have some fun on the way to forming a team.

First of all if you’re looking for just two teams dividing effectively into half, for example, cross arms, left over the top of right or right over the top of left. It will give you two teams.

Cooking, do you prefer to cook or clean.

A pet, are you a dog person or a cat person.

Numbers, think of the last digit of your mobile phone number or the street address, that’ll either be an odd or an even.

And then finally are you a good news person or a bad news person first followed by the other.

Let’s say though you’re looking for multiples, more than just two teams. Again, many options.

You could look at the month or the date in which you were born. So all the months get together. All the seasons get together.

Family members, all the eldest, all the in-between, and the youngest get together, or perhaps the number of siblings in your family. Again note that these are just random ways of forming those teams.

Holiday destination, either leave it up to the group to determine where their favourite holiday destination is or give them three options and they have to choose.

Favourite day of the week, and so on and so on.

Here’s my last minute tip. Ask your group to find which way they like to look at their fingernails. They’ll either go like this or like this. There’s another two-team split.
