4 x Team-Building Activities for Employees

Fun & Effective Team Building Ideas for the Workplace

If you’re on the hunt for team-building activities that genuinely work with employees—without the cringe—you’re in the right place.

I’m going to share four of my all-time favourite team-building activities that are 100% fun, easy to run, and don’t require anything fancy.

All you need is a stopwatch, a deck of cards, or some scrap paper.

Each of these activities helps teams explore and develop key group and team-building skills like communication, problem-solving, and collaboration.

Let’s dive in.

4 Team-Building Activities That Work with Employees

#1 About Now

Props needed: Stopwatch
Skills developed: Time awareness, coordination, decision making

This one is so simple, yet incredibly revealing.

Ask your group to start on one side of the room, and without using a clock, each person must cross a designated line – like a rope or a basketball line – precisely at the 60-second mark.

Everyone starts walking at their own pace when you say go.

What’s fascinating is how wildly different people’s perceptions of 60 seconds can be.

Some will cross at 40 seconds, convinced they’ve nailed it.

Others won’t move until 80 seconds have passed.

Take note of:

  • The first person to cross
  • The person closest to the 60-second mark
  • The last person to cross

Then repeat the challenge, asking the group to reduce the time gap between first and last.

This activity opens up great conversations about coordination, timing, and leveraging different strengths.

#2 Blackjack

Props needed: Deck of cards
Skills developed: Non-verbal communication, teamwork, problem solving

This is one of those team building games that’s just plain fun.

Hand out a card to each participant, making sure no one looks at their card.

Then, ask everyone to place their card on their forehead – visible to everyone else, but not to themselves.

The goal?

Create as many “blackjacks” as possible – groups of people whose card values add up to 19, 20 or 21.

The twist: it’s non-verbal. No talking, just silent movement and deduction.

The group must figure out who to pair or group up with using nothing but eye contact, gestures and intuition.

It’s an excellent way to practise communication, critical thinking, and leadership – all under the guise of a playful challenge.

#3 Paper Holding

Props needed: A4 paper (recycled is fine!)
Skills developed: Creativity, collaboration, adaptability

This is hands-down one of the most creative team-building activities I’ve ever used.

In pairs (or groups of up to five), each team receives a bunch of paper.

Their objective is to suspend and hold as many sheets of paper as possible between two people, without letting the paper touch the ground or another sheet.

And no folding allowed!

They can use their hands, knees, elbows – whatever body parts make sense – as long as each sheet is being held between two people.

#4 Alter Shake

Props needed: None
Skills developed: Coordination, group strategy, social interaction

This game needs no equipment or even much space.

The challenge: shake hands with every person in the room, alternating hands each time.

Start with your right hand, then left with the next person, back to right, and so on.

Simple? On paper, yes. In practice, it gets messy – and that’s where the learning happens.

Expect laughs, fumbles, and plenty of problem-solving as your group works out how to make it happen.

And if physical touch is an issue in your group, you can substitute fist bumps or elbow taps – just make sure to alternate arms.

This game is a great way to warm up a room and sneak in some high-level collaboration, leadership and facilitation skills practice.
