Non-Verbal Group Games for Groups that Don’t Speak Your Language

Super-Engaging Non-Verbal Group Games

Worried about running a program with participants who don’t speak English?

I’ve been there – and I’ve got you covered.

These three non-verbal group games require no words, no translation, and no equipment.

They’re fun, they’re easy to lead, and they’ll have your group laughing, interacting, and connecting in no time.

Whether you’re leading a workshop abroad, welcoming international delegates, or simply want to mix things up with some non-verbal team-building games, these activities will spark energy and engagement right from the start.

Why Non-Verbal Games Work So Well

Over the past 35 years, I’ve had the privilege of leading programs in countries where I didn’t speak the language – places like China, Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand.

Even with the help of a translator, things can get lost in translation. That’s why I’ve found the most powerful approach is this: show, don’t tell.

When your instructions are visual and demonstrated, you don’t need to say a word.

You just lead with your body, and the group follows.

3 x Non-Verbal Group Games

The three non-verbal games below are some of my absolute favourites.

They’re great for breaking the ice, building trust, and energising any group, no matter what language the participants speak.

#1 Copy Claps

This simple energiser works brilliantly in both small group and large conference settings. It’s also one of the best ways to grab attention and get everyone involved – without saying a word.

Here’s how it works:

  • Stand in front of your group.
  • Clap a short, simple rhythm.
  • Turn your ear slightly as a non-verbal cue for the group to repeat what they heard.
  • Repeat with a new rhythm.

By the third round, most people will be clapping along with you. It’s that intuitive.

From there, you can build in more complex rhythms or even playful patterns that get people laughing and moving.

This is one of my go-to group games when I need an instant connection without words.

#2 Gotcha

Gotcha is a hilarious, high-energy non-verbal game that never fails to trigger laughs and surprises.

Here’s how it works:

  • Have everyone form pairs or a circle.
  • Each person places one open palm in front of them.
  • Then, with their other hand, place one finger lightly into the palm of the person beside them.

Once everyone is ready set, say “GO!” and the fun begins:

  • Try to snatch your finger away before it gets caught.
  • Simultaneously, try to catch the person’s finger on your other side.

Cue the laughter. This non-verbal team-building game is a favourite of mine for its sheer joy and energy.

It’s easy to vary too – try switching hands or creating larger circle formations for a fresh twist. Click here to learn many other fun variations.

#3 Five Handshakes In Five Minutes

This one’s all about movement, connection, and joy. It’s especially effective when your group can move around in an open space.

Here’s how it works:

  • Without saying anything, I go up to someone and give them a high five.
  • Then I find another person and repeat.
  • Soon, people start copying – and before you know it, everyone is high-fiving.

But don’t stop there! Cycle through a fun variety of gestures such as:

  • High five
  • Low five (down by the knees)
  • Fist bump
  • Elbow tap
  • “Happy Salmon” (my favourite)

The Happy Salmon involves flapping your forearms together like a fish out of water.

It’s silly, it’s physical, and it always gets big laughs.

This energising non-verbal game invites movement and interaction and helps people feel more connected, without needing a single word.

While this activity is called “Five Handshakes in Five Minutes,” it usually wraps up in two or three. And remember, it’s not about everyone reaching everyone – it’s about inviting fun, interaction and laughter.
