Appreciation vs Affirmation – What’s the Difference?

Why “Thank You” Isn’t Enough: The Lost Art of Affirmation

When did you last receive a handwritten note in the post?

Not an email, not a text – an actual letter someone sat down to write.

Chances are, it made your day, perhaps your week.

There’s something about a person taking deliberate time for you that lands differently than any digital shortcut.

That difference is worth unpacking, because it points to a distinction every facilitator should hold onto: the gap between appreciation and affirmation.

Appreciation says thank you for what you did.

It’s warm, it’s welcome, and it’s the currency of most workplace interactions.

Affirmation goes somewhere else entirely.

It says I see something remarkable in who you are – your honesty, your courage, your generosity of spirit.

One acknowledges an action. The other recognises a person.

Facilitators spend their working lives noticing people: how they show up, what they contribute, the quiet strengths they might not see in themselves.

That noticing is a gift, but it only counts if it’s spoken aloud.

Here’s The Challenge

Today, reach out to one person in your world – a client, a participant, a colleague – and don’t just thank them for something they did. Take a moment to affirm something special about who they are.

It costs nothing and takes moments, yet it can reshape how someone sees themselves.

We’d love to hear from you too.

Drop a comment below and tell us what’s made a genuine difference to you in your facilitation journey, whether from our YouTube channel, playmeo, or anywhere else along the way.

We read every single one, and we’re genuinely looking forward to hearing from you.
