Step-by-Step Instructions

expand_circle_down
  1. Form teams of three people.
  2. Distribute two sheets of unfolded A4 scrap paper, one small coin and 30cm (12″) of masking tape to each team.
  3. Challenge each team to design and build a descent package that, when dropped from a height of 3m (10ft), lands as far as possible from the point directly below the drop.
  4. Explain that at least one full sheet of paper must be part of the final package, the coin must be included start to finish and cutting/tearing the paper is allowed.
  5. Importantly, when the time comes, the package can not be propelled – gravity only.
  6. Allow 10 minutes for teams to build their packages.
  7. When ready, establish a plumb line from the drop point to the floor and mark the point directly below.
  8. Invite each team in turn to briefly present their design, then drop their package from the designated height.
  9. Measure and record each landing distance from the plumb line.
  10. Announce the winning team.
  11. If desired, invite your group to reflect on their experience.
