Interactive Icebreaker Game

This fun guessing game creates extensive peer connections through mystery-solving and reverse-engineering challenges. Back Tracking is an engaging interactive icebreaker game that encourages lots of mixing, multiple conversations and speculation. The activity builds curiosity, analytical thinking, and meaningful interactions while creating memorable moments of discovery and revelation.

Step-by-Step Instructions

In advance, visit the Resources tab and download a set of 24 sample icebreaker questions, or develop a list of your own.
Print (or write) these questions onto index cards to provide one question (card) per person.
Gather your group and tape (or pin) one question card to the back of each person, ie no one should see or know the question pinned to their back.
Distribute a blank sheet of paper (answer sheet) and a pen to each person.
When ready, invite each person to meet with at least 10 other people, asking their partner to answer the question that is stuck to their back.
An individual is never permitted to know or see the question on their back, nor can others provide any clues other than their answers to that question.
With each interaction, ask each person to record their partner’s responses on their answer sheet.
Allow this interaction to continue until everyone has collected at least ten responses to the question on their back.
When ready, invite each person to read some (or all) of the responses they received, and then predict what the question (pinned to their back) is before finally looking at their card (for the first time.)
Celebrate these predictions and revelations regardless of how accurate they may or may not be.
Invite the next person to share the responses on their sheet and make a guess.
Continue sharing for as long as you choose.
